To the Space Marines, they hold a significance akin to that which the transhuman warriors hold to ordinary Guardsmen—an elite caste so elevated that their raw power and will are utterly insurmountable. In war, they are god-like warriors who can take on thousands. Beyond the battlefield, the Custodes are also philosophers and artists, each an exceptional scholar. As the Emperor's chosen, they must excel in all aspects to the utmost. Although the Custodes initially numbered ten thousand, approximately five years after the War Within the Webway, their ranks had diminished to around a thousand. However, by the 41st Millennium, their strength has been restored to its original ten thousand.
