The Blood Angels Chapter recruits its aspirants from their homeworld, Baal, and its moons. Each generation undergoes a series of rigorous trials. Fifty victors emerge from brutal gladiatorial contests and are brought to the Blood Angels' fortress on Baal. There, they must endure an unbroken 72-hour vigil without rest.
At the end of this trial, the remaining aspirants are granted the sacred chalice by the Blood Priests. Upon drinking from it, they fall into a deep coma and are placed within the stone sarcophagi of the Hall of the Lost. Within these life-supporting crypts, their bodies are infused with blood carrying the sacred genetic legacy of Sanguinius. Many perish, unable to withstand the transformation wrought by the gene-seed; others wake too soon, only to be driven mad by the suffocating darkness. Only those who survive every ordeal emerge as true neophytes of the Chapter—worthy Sons of Sanguinius!
