The Ultramarines were the XIIIth Legion of the Great Crusade. Though the Codex Astartes mandated the splitting of all surviving Legions, the number thirteen endures upon many ancestral heraldries of the Ultramarines. XIII is emblazoned upon countless ancient wargear, banners and vehicle hulls of the Chapter.
As a disciplined fighting force, the Ultramarines stand sworn to defend the Five Hundred Worlds of Ultramar, ever ready to answer calls for aid from across the wider Imperium. They hold to the belief that a great military exists as a byproduct of a prosperous realm; the Chapter exists to serve the Imperium, not the other way around. This philosophy manifests in their dedication to wartime sustainment and post-war reconstruction.
The Ultramarines seek no narrow specialisation. They regard themselves as versatile, adaptable all-purpose warriors, equipped to confront any contingency and adopt whatever tactics the moment demands. They judge each situation carefully, gather every scrap of intelligence available, and transform into whatever form the mission requires — whether a crushing warhammer or a finely honed dagger.
Were it not for their overzealous pursuit of honour and glory, alongside a rigid adherence to established doctrine, they would be the most pragmatically grounded of all the Space Marine Chapters.
